Things to know about Apostille certified translations
Apostille certifies the international legitimacy of a document, thus making an official document legally valid outside the territory of its country of issuance. Not all documents require an Apostille, however, and requirements may differ depending on the country and the specific document type.
Document authenticity certification (legalisation) means certification of an official's seal and signature, so that public documents executed in one country would obtain legal effect in another country. Traditionally, this function is carried out by foreign affairs services and consular officials at diplomatic missions. If the document is intended for use in a country that is party to the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents of October 5, 1961, its authenticity is certified with an Apostille affixed by the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Documents certified with an Apostille can be submitted to institutions of the respective country without any additional certification. If the document is intended for use in a country that is not party to the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents of October 5, 1961, it has to be legalised by the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia or by a diplomatic or consular mission of the Republic of Latvia, and then by a competent authority of the country where the document is going to be served (the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or a diplomatic or consular mission of such foreign country).
